ROY G. KRENKEL FATHER OF HEROIC FANTASY A Centennial Celebration

$95.00

ROY G. KRENKEL FATHER OF HEROIC FANTASY A Centennial Celebration

Highest Recommendation. !!

. A magnificent, best-ever look at Krenkel’s entire career. Oversized. Loaded with previously unpublished work. One of the most renowned fantasy artists of the 20th century. Krenkel’s far-reaching influence on–and work with–artists like Frazetta, Williamson, Kaluta and Jeffrey Jones, to name but a few, was immeasurable and cannot be overstated

12x13” 304pgs hardcover

Krenkel illustrated Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard and others–but much of his work, full-blown paintings and illustrations, often were unpublished and never seen by even his biggest fans.

Most of the images in this book are published here for the very first time (courtesy of and with the full cooperation of the Krenkel Estate), and nearly all have been painstakingly scanned from the original art (in a manner akin to IDW’s Eisner Award-winning Artist’s Edition series) with the goal being to showcase Krenkel’s gorgeous original art in a way it has never been seen before.

While science-fiction, heroic fantasy, paleontology, and historical reconstruction were particular specialties of Roy’s, his pen, brush, and palette knew no boundaries. This shows that, from superbly rendered lion’s heads, to nudes, to homages to favorite artists like Norman Lindsay (and especially his voluptuous nudes), and the fine-line styles of N.C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle, Jose Segrelles (still nearly unknown but a giant of fantasy art–in Spain), Joseph Clement Coll and Franklin Booth. Roy was instrumental in introducing his fellow artists to the greats of illustration, such as these and others.

Chapters include Ancient Worlds, Early Inspiration, E.R. Burroughs, Roy and his Friends, Sirens and Sibyls, Paleo Wonders, Robert E. Howard, Enchantments, Pulps and Machines, Warren & Others (Roy did special one-off pages in the early issues of Creepy and Eerie), and Into the Wild. Most of this is shot from the original art, so even with pen and ink work, this is printed entirely in full color to catch every nuance and detail. The color work is superb.
